●Clamp-on meters Clamp-on meters measure electric current without cutting off the live circuit. Since the meter does not make direct contact with live wiring, it can be handled safely. Clamp-on meters are particularly useful when laying AC electric wires in the ceiling or installing DC electric equipment into motor vehicles. |

The conductor is the primary coil of a current transformer. The jaws of the clamp-on meter are composed of permalloy core with the winding coil which connects to the meter circuit. First the conductor current determines the strength of the magnetic field around the permalloy core. Then at the end of the winding, the magnetic field induces secondary out-put which is restored to the conductor current. Finally it is indicated on the clamp-on meter.
